8th Grade
Please note that this page is for the 2025-2026 school year.
Students entering grade 8 are required to read at least TWO books during the summer. Students may read any books that meet the requirements below. Students will select ONE book to complete the assignment listed below.
Book Requirements
- A novel that is at least 150 pages
- Must have chapters, unless it is a graphic novel/MANGA
- Fiction is highly encouraged
Ways to obtain a book over the summer
- Visit the Mountain Park or Lilburn Public Library
- Libby Account through Gwinnett County Public Library
- Username: GCPS Student ID#
- Password: Month/Day (MM/DD) of birthday (ex. February 14 would be 0214, October 31 would be 1031)
- ComicsPlus
- TMS Book Bin (located at main entrance of TMS)
Assignment
Within the first month of school, you will create a one pager that includes both visual symbols and key words, phrases, or sentences that clearly and concisely show how the author develops the theme of the text through characters, setting, plot, and conflict.
Your one pager MUST INCLUDE:

- A border with words, symbols, and/or images that represents the topic and theme of your text.
- Example:
- Topic - Identity
- Theme: Our identities are shaped by our experiences and interactions with others.
- Example:
- Images and/or words that represent the main characters from the novel and how they change.
- Words and/or images that show the significance of the setting and how it contributes to the theme.
- Images and quotations that show how the plot, or sequence of events, helps to develop the theme.
- You may add other symbols, drawings, and words that represent the conflict.
